As we develop econicLife.com, we’ve been looking at this question fairly closely.  When you have options like facebook, twitter, linkedin et. al - why would you create yet another profile on cooltribe.com?

When it comes to creating a marketplace that competes with Etsy, yahoo stores, ebay stores and amazon.  We’ve been extremely careful to ensure we answer that question.

Kiva

I’m sure everyone has heard of Kiva - an organization that helps donors connect with, and lend money to, entrepreneurs and small businesses in developing countries. This is yet another example of web application development being created to produce real, tangible good.  Kiva’s founders developed a simple interface, with a basic set of tools and an important, but focused premise. And have been wildly successful.

Even Bill Clinton is on board…

I’ve partially funded this small business.  After travelling through Nicaragua extensively, and even visiting the town she is in, I feel a closeness to this woman’s venture.  There are literally tens of thousands of general stores just like hers.. and yes, I’ve purchased cigarettes (this was a number of years ago), soda and snacks from dozens of them.  I hope that my small loan will assist her with what she needs to make her business more successful.
